“Resilience Therapy emphasizes our inherent capacity to heal from trauma when we have sufficient access to resources and support. Every human being has an intrinsic drive toward wholeness when these resources and supports are available.”  Dr. Arielle Schwartz

Resilience is the psychological (and physiological) flexibility that allows us to navigate difficult situations (both internal and external) and eventually return to a state of dynamic equilibrium.

Our automatic nervous system plays a central role in maintaining our physical and mental health. Somatic Psychotherapy and Resilience Therapy (Arielle Schwartz, PhD) develop personalized practices to help us learn how to regulate our nervous system. These practices utilize brain neuroplasticity and Polyvagal Theory (Stephen Porges, PhD) to cultivate resilience in our nervous system, assisting in the return to a dynamic balance between stimulation and relaxation (sympathetic and parasympathetic systems).

These practices develop integrated communication between various elements of our system: body (physiology), mind (psyche), breath, emotions, and energetic interactions (Arielle Schwartz). This communication generates a feedback loop that assists in the continuous regulation of the nervous system, as well as strengthening the neural circuits associated with a more conscious and integrated life.

According to Polyvagal Theory, our mental and emotional states are closely related to the states of our nervous system. The flexibility of our autonomic nervous system facilitates psychological and emotional flexibility, resilience factors that help us navigate the various currents of life, staying on course towards our true aspirations.
