Buddhist Psychology

Many of our therapeutic practices and principles are based on elements of Buddhist Psychology, particularly the teachings of the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the teachings of Buddhist Masters from Burma and Thailand (Theravada Tradition).

Thich Nhat Hanh compares our mind to a garden, where we are the gardener. Just as composted organic matter becomes nutrients for a blooming rose, a good gardener learns the art of transforming suffering into nutrients for our growth. First, it is necessary to stop and look inward, to accept and embrace our pains and incongruities, and to understand the causes of our suffering, the message it brings. To understand the purpose of the pain. Thich Nhat Hanh says that from this understanding, love and compassion are born, the energies that have the power to transform suffering into growth, into mental clarity. A clarity that reveals the path to follow to live in greater awareness and harmony.

Thich Nhat Hanh explains that the art of transforming suffering and the art of generating happiness complement each other. To embrace pain, one must first recognize elements of happiness and learn to cultivate states of well-being. He calls this selective watering. In the soil of the mind, there are seeds of all qualities: seeds of thoughts and emotions that generate disharmony and others that generate harmony. When we water positive seeds with our attention, we harvest harmonious mental states. When we avoid watering negative seeds, disharmony diminishes.

Thich Nhat Hanh also teaches about the four nutrients: food, sensory impressions, volition, and consciousness. The quality of these nutrients influences our body and mind. When we take care of the quality of what we are ingesting, not only in meals but also in the media to which we are exposed—in conversations, music, and news—this reflects on our mental and physical health.

When we learn to cultivate a more resilient and conscious life, we gradually awaken more mental clarity and balance, and we can direct more energy towards the path of self-knowledge and compassion. and towards the path of reconciliation. Reconciling  with the essence of our existence, with the interconnectedness of all Life. With a heart without limits.
